Brand of the Month: Mabboo

The Brand of the Month for January is Mabboo! They are a brand that produces women’s and men’s tops, t-shirts, underwear, and socks made out of bamboo. They have also made sunglasses, toothbrushes, phone cases, watches, cutlery, straws, ear buds, notebooks, and even a calculator out of bamboo! I think they have a great way of showing how these items can be made from alternatives to plastic – it makes you realise how many things we just assume has to made out of plastic.

Founded in 2008 by Ed Cheney, Mabboo was the original brand built on bamboo (try saying that fast!) and is based in Bristol. I usually go to their store in Bristol (The Galleries) but they’re available online too.

About bamboo

While writing this blog post, I did a bit of research into bamboo as a material and found out a lot of facts that I didn’t know before…

·     It’s a member of the grass family

·     One of its species is the fastest growing plant in the world (and in general the whole species typically grows incredibly fast)

·     Bamboo absorbs more CO2 per hectare than trees

·     Phyllostachys edulis (the moso bamboo) is the most common type of bamboo used to make fabric

·     While the largest amount of bamboo is grown in China, you can also find bamboo forests in Korea, Australia, and even New Jersey, USA!

·     It’s naturally organic as it doesn’t require any pesticides or fertilisers to grow

·     Bamboo requires very little water to grow

These items were a gift at Christmas and I was so pleased as I rarely go out and buy myself really nice underwear! The underwear and socks are both incredibly soft and lightweight, they really feel luxurious. The fabric is also very breathable, making it ideal for underwear and socks. The briefs are £9 each and the socks start from £6 per pair.

Mabboo is one of the more affordable brands I’ve found who sell ethical, vegan underwear, and they have such a fantastic range to choose from. They are literally a one-stop-shop for all your bamboo basics!
